Derby City Council | Derby, UK
Winner: Wayshowing IIID Award 2009
The challenge
Derby’s industrial heritage was the key theme in our wayfinding and public art masterplan. We delivered a wayfinding scheme for the city developing place specific strategies, detailed consultation exercises, and public art engagement.
What we did
Using both traditional street signage and digital information delivered to users’ smartphones via QR code scanning, the scheme provides place-specific visitor navigation, orientation, and interpretation, developing the local character and identity of engineering and making traditions.
Why it works
The sign is conceived as an extruded cog formed in aluminium on to which dynamic shaped panels are fixed to deliver the required navigational information. The colours of the signs reflect the character areas in the city.
