Our work for the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers (Usdaw) is nearing completion, with internal wayfinding and signage being installed in the union’s new head office in Salford.

Usdaw is one of Britain’s largest trade unions representing workers in the retail, distribution, manufacturing and service sectors.  Established over 125 years ago, in Manchester and Birmingham, today it represents around 400,000 workers nationwide, with its head offices in Salford.

Working with Workspace Design & Build, we developed a wayfinding concept and designed the internal signage across the new Usdaw building.  Pre-pandemic, Usdaw offices would regularly welcome members for meetings, meaning that the offices needed to be as easy to navigate by first-time visitors as for members of staff.

The project was carried out during lockdown whilst offices were closed to staff and members, and is being now being installed in time for the new office redevelopment and opening. The scheme reinforces the new USDAW brand through the wayfinding and a strong sense of identity both internally and externally for this increasingly vital workers union.

Sue Manley, Placemarque’s Strategy Director, said:

“We know that many people will be looking forward to coming to the new USDAW head offices when they open.”
